Research Interest

My research interest is in bringing the benefits of technology, primarily, to the third world residents. As a result what ever has the potential to help the people in Pakistan and the south east asia, Africa, South America and the developing nations in the far east.

This is the area which brings challenges like illiteracy, severe power and network failure to the table. There is a lot of potential in this area, we can do a lot in the field of education, health care and even entertainment. Providing entertainment in the entertainment deprived developing world is in itself quite laudable. Moreover, it can be used to attract the masses to other technologies related to health care and education that we develop.

Due to my research interest, I have had the opportunity to work in diverse areas like Distance Education, Learning Problems, Disease Epidemiology and Speech applications with Umar Saif (LUMS), Ashraf Iqbal (LUMS), Richard Anderson (U of Washington, Seattle), Roni Rosenfeld (Carnegie Mellon U), John Guttag (MIT) and Zeeshan Syed (U of Michigan, Ann Arbor).

SMSall (previously known as Chopaal) (click here)
I was the Co-Founder of this service. We developed, Chopaal, as a social network over cell phones where people could send out a text message and multiple people of similar interests would receive it. With the initial motivation of disaster relief management, soon the endeavor was to provide similar social connectivity as facebook or orkut in a country where the Internet users are 10% of the total population and cellphone penetration is close to 70% of the total population. Chopaal has evolved into SMSall, a startup, which has sent over 4 billion text messages for 4 million users in Pakistan.
